In 2020, during the depth of the pandemic after multiple conferences had been postponed, DC launched a unique distributed virtual conference featuring a multiverse of games and experiences for comic-fans around the globe.
Joker's Revenge
We supported Wildlife and Sid Lee in the creation of Joker's Revenge : A fun WebGL multi-level game taking players through different dimensions of the world of the Joker from Batman.
Masks of Madness
The focus for Occurrent Arts was Masks of Madness, the first of 3 mini-games from Joker's Escape. In this experience you sit before a mirror surrounded by 5 masks which represent the different Jokers spanning DC Comics' history. You can "try them on these masks and attempt to match the corresponding Joker laugh. If you match 3 of them, the mirror opens like a door to continue the game.
The Laugh Track
We helped concept and develop the game mechanics which notated the Joker's laugh with "Ha's" as if they were music notes spaced along a timeline. We developed a system where a player's laptop microphone could be used to listen to their laugh and analyze the rhythmic pattern to determine whether it matched of the style of the corresponding Joker.
Putting it all together
We then helped Wildlife and Sid Lee integrate this laughing game into the immersive 3D world of the Joker. We analyzed audio-clips of the 5 different iconic Joker laughs and matched them to provided Joker animations which cackle in the mirror for the player to mimic. The result was a fun and interactive multi-media experience which pushed the boundaries of whats possible for browser-based gaming. For more info on the project, check out Wildlife's documentation.
